Cabinet today has approved The Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill, a set of new proposed laws that move us from an era of self regulation to where platforms will be held to account over online safety.
This Bill incorporates the majority of the 33 recommendations put forward by the Joint Oireachtas Committee for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media.
The recommendation for an individual complaints mechanism for harmful online content, raises complex issues and requires further consideration.
I’m setting up an expert group this month to report to me, which I may use as the basis for an amendment to the Bill.
I will now look to establish Coimisiún na Meán (Media Commission) on an administrative basis prior to the enactment of the Bill and begin recruiting for roles, including the Online Safety Commissioner.
The Bill can now start the process of formally going through the Houses of the Oireachtas.
